Servin' up some Blues for the Holidays
By releasing my new CD, WHY I CHOOSE TO SING THE BLUES, hopefully I will answer the question that's been on a lot of folks' minds...Just why DO I choose to sing the Blues?
When I started out oh so many years ago as a professional musician, my earliest influences were, interestingly enough, the British bands whose music I was soaking up: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Them, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, et al. Little did I know at the time, but they had mostly all started out copying the music that came from a short distance away from my Milwaukee home, Chicago IL...the home of the Blues.
When I dug a little deeper I found a treasure trove of music that would influence me for the rest of my life as a singer. Blues legends like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, BB King, and James Cotton not only inspired me with their impassioned music and vocal styles, but guys like Cotton, Little Walter and Paul Butterfield shaped me and my love of Blues Harmonica. No matter what genre of music I delved into, the soulful blues underlying my vocals could not be denied. Blue eyed soul indeed!
When I began writing songs with Terry Abrahamson several years ago, I had no idea that our collaboration would result in over 5 dozen songs, or eventually lead to the release of this record. While we've composed songs in many different genres for many different artists, it's Terry's deep love of the Blues, as well as his coffee table photo memoir, IN THE BELLY OF THE BLUES, that has fired us up to try to write some modern Blues classics which will hopefully be discovered by some of the living Blues legends as well as some of the great up and comers in the Blues world. We thought folks might want to hear MY versions of these tunes before they become hits for someone else!
And so... here it is. Just in time for holiday gift giving. We hope you enjoy this uniquely American brand of music and want to share it with someone else.
